Bebop

So I am so unmotivated today that I was actually counting the minutes until I could leave to go watch 16 5-12 year olds perform "Bebop with Aesop", a musical that no one not related to a cast member will ever see. Like all the past two summers' musicals it was cute. I thought it was better than "Saint-Saƫns' Carnival of the Animals" (no plot to speak of) and on par with "Of Mice and Mozart". We had five classic Aesop fables* performed for us and in case you didn't catch the moral Aesop told you and then the cast sang about it.

Here's the best Greek Chorus member ;)
(My God she was wearing a lot of eye make-up.)

What I really wanted to kill part of the afternoon with is stories from the field, but that'll wait until the next post.

*No sour grapes. We got "The Tortoise and the Hare", "Boy Who Cried Wolf", "The Ant and The Grasshopper", and the ones with the morals "look before you leap" and "Don't count you chickens before they hatch".

Ack! Mice!

Just went to see Of Mice and Mozart, performed by local 6-10 year-olds. Two very brave ladies (both of whom, coincidentally, I know from church, how weird is that?) decided to try a musical with little kids this summer. In two weeks, three hours a weekday, they got a musical out of those kids. They all had their lines memorized, mostly sang loud enough to be heard, and were entirely too cute. (I'm only slightly biased, being the sister to one of the actresses.)

Kudos to Laura and Jane (and any other helpers)! Bravo to the kids!

I took pictures, of course, but not very many (low battery).

Singing in Public

I now know why Mom enjoyed signing along to the muzak at the store. Because it annoyed me.

A few days ago I went to IHOP with the folks and baby Sis. Sis was complaining about the music we, the adults, like. Started out complaining about "40s music", i.e. Big Band jazz, and then said something about that "O-de O-de Oh" song. At first I was completely confused and then it hit me the goatherd song from The Sound of Music. So, of course, I said "do you mean?" and started singing. She started saying "no", "stop", and other cries of general anguish. As I opened the door she asked that I please not sing in the parking lot or restaurant. So I sang right up until my head went out the door, then leaned back in picking right back up. I repeated this action several times to her horror.

It was GREAT.

Now I understand that when it seemed like my parents were doing something just to annoy me, they were. One of the secret pleasures of parenthood.
